Here’s brand new music from rising Chicago rapper Rello, whom we’ve previously featured in our New Artist Spotlight. The Dreamers EP features an appearance from Gemstones, and an all around positive message that is so truly necessary. Rello also released a video to accompany “Make It” a dedication to all young mothers, which can be heard on the EP. Watch the video, and find a download link below. Continue reading
If Melanie Fiona‘s debut The Bridge detailed the series of unfortunate events that led up to the catastrophic end of a bad relationship, The MF Life, her sophomore effort, is the soundtrack that carries the listener through the wake of the post-breakup aftermath, and into the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.
On the surface, the album has the potential to give off a relatively melancholy vibe, bolstered by a negative (but justified) stance on relationships. However, upon delving deeper, it’s clear that the project truly tells the story of a young woman’s long overdue venture in regaining knowledge of self, while relentlessly gripping the reigns of empowerment. Themes of self-assertion perpetually flow throughout each of the 13 (standard edition) tracks; signifying the growth that Fiona has experienced both as an artist, and more importantly, as a woman, in the three years since our last encounter with her artistry. Well if you didn’t know already, Nicki Minaj & her Young Money boss Lil Wayne are much more than artists. They are brands; enterprises all their own. Apart from their music, they’re consistently aligning themselves with products and organizations that further represent the personas they’ve created for themselves, and the expansion continues. With two new endorsement deals with one of the largest soft-drink manufacturers in the world, two of YMCMB’s marquee acts are about to usher themselves into the upper echelon of artist-entrepreneurs. Melody Thornton is ready to step into her own spotlight. The former Pussycat Doll member recently released her first solo mixtape project “P.O.Y.B.L.” (Piss On Your Black List) If the title’s not enough to raise a few eyebrows and spark a little attention, the music will definitely wake a few people up. The 10-track offering provides a good mix of what I fondly refer to as crazy girl/sweet girl music. (Think Melanie Fiona or Jazmine Sullivan content-wise.) It’s the perfect way for her to assert her independence as an artist, and as a woman. Intrigued? Stream & download below: Continue reading
In preparation for the release of the new film “Think Like A Man” 106 & Park host turned actor Terrence J and Hollywood producer Will Packer cover the Men’s Issue of BE Magazine. In their respective features, the two gentlemen discuss the impact that their new film has had on their careers, and how they think the film will impact the fans and culture as a whole when it hits theaters on April 20th. Here’s what Terrence J had to say about his experience: Continue reading
Wale‘s still pushing out the singles from his latest album Ambition, and next up is the Lloyd assisted “Sabotage”. The song tells the tale of an up and down relationship, which is something that Wale’s become so great at illustrating. The Asher Levin-directed visual has a high school theme, and features rising star Sabi as Wale’s leading lady. Watch below: Continue reading
The blue-haired reigning Pop princess Katy Perry made the bold choice to perform an acoustic cover of Jay-Z & Kanye West‘s smash hit “Ni**as In Paris” during a recent performance on BBC’s Radio’s 1Xtra “Live Lounge”. Of course, to make it that much more authentic, she donned a navy blue Yankee fitted, kept the brim pretty low, and spit those bars like there was no tomorrow. If you’re wondering… throughout the performance, she replaced the word “ni**as” with ninjas. Classy. My favorite part is the “don’t let me get in my zone” breakdown toward the end of the song. She killed it. Take a look here. Continue reading

Rihanna phoned in to Ryan Seacrest‘s LA radio show this morning and finally explained her controversial decision to collaborate with her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown on their recent hit single “Birthday Cake (Remix)” Of course, she’s taken a lot of heat for it, but… she couldn’t care less. Here’s what she had to say: Continue reading
Finally J. Cole releases the visual for one of my favorite tracks from his #1 album Cole World: The Sideline Story. The Colin Tilley-directed clip for “Nobody’s Perfect” features an appearance from the legendary Missy Elliott. It’s got a futuristic vibe to it, almost like a series of dream sequences, which matches Cole’s reflective lyrics on fame and love. Watch below.
Hopefully, with the release of the visual, the album gains a new life. I always thought this track should have been a leading single, but… I’m just a girl who blogs. What do I know? LOL
Sidenote: If you’re in Austin for SXSW, J. Cole is performing a free show TODAY (3/15) at Empire Automotive. More details at Day & A Dream.
