The Nominees for the 84th Annual Academy Awards were announced bright and early this morning. There weren’t many surprises, but there will be a few tight races to watch when the show airs next month. All eyes will be on Hollywood for film’s biggest night…and it’s definitely going to be an amazing show.
In the major categories:
Actress In A Supporting Role
Bérénice Bejo (The Artist)
Jessica Chastain (The Help)
Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids)
Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs)
Octavia Spencer (The Help)
Actor In A Supporting Role
Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn)
Jonah Hill (Moneyball)
Nick Nolte (Warrior)
Christopher Plummer (Beginners)
Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close)
Actress In A Leading Role
Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs)
Viola Davis (The Help)
Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady)
Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn)
Actor In A Leading Role
Demián Bichir (A Better Life)
George Clooney (The Descendants)
Jean Dujardin (The Artist)
Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)
Brad Pitt (Moneyball)
Best Picture
The Artist (Thomas Langmann, Producer)
The Descendants (Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, Producers)
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Scott Rudin, Producer)
The Help (Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, Producers)
Hugo (Graham King and Martin Scorsese, Producers)
Midnight in Paris (Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, Producers)
Moneyball (Michael De Luca, Rachael Horovitz and Brad Pitt, Producers)
The Tree of Life (Nominees to be determined)
War Horse (Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, Producers)
How about Jonah Hill! From Superbad to the Academy Awards… anything is possible! Kudos to him. The tightest race will be the Lead Actress category: Meryl Streep vs Viola Davis. It would be nice to see Viola Davis win, but, Meryl Streep is a formidable opponent. Missing? Indie films like Mooz-Lum and Pariah. Those would have been great dark horse additions, but… alas. It is the Academy. I’ve only been fortunate enough to see 3 of the films in the Best Picture category, two of which I saw at last year’s Cannes Film Festival (Tree Of Life , Midnight In Paris) in addition to The Help. I’ll be catching the rest before the show airs on ABC, February 26th.

Can’t wait for the big night! I want to see at least all the movies nominated for best picture, which were all in my watchlist anyway 😛 I’ve only seen Moneyball and Midnight in Paris. Moneyball wasn’t bad, but it really doesn’t deserve an Oscar in my opinion. And Midnight in Paris, oh, I LOVED IT! What do you think of it?
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed 😉 Xoxo!
Andrea Brown said:
Midnight In Paris was good… probably my second favorite film I saw at Cannes (after “Drive” w/ Ryan Gosling)
Thanks for reading! 🙂

I hoped that for foreign language movie this one would be nominated, as I find it very good http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Land_of_Blood_and_Honey
I would not expect it in first, but angelina jolie seems to be better director (as she is actress)
Andrea Brown said:
In The Land Of Blood And Honey is one of the films on my watchlist… I’ve heard great things about it.

I can’t tell you how disappointed I am that I never saw Hugo in 3D. From all that I’ve heard, it was spectacular — perhaps they’ll bring it out again now that it’s the top nominee?
Fingers crossed…

Ryan Gosling. Snubbed.
That is all.
Andrea Brown said:
Snubbed for…? Drive? Or Crazy Stupid Love? Or Ides Of March? I think he did well in all of those films.

I confess I haven’t seen half the nominated movies (none, actually) but after reading all the reviews and having seen most of Gary Oldman’s movies, I’ll be rooting for him to win Best Leading Actor. He’s too good an actor and it’s time his work is acknowledged.

Thanks for this! I had been looking for the list this morning. A blogger friend’s son was in Moneyball and I wondered if he got the nod, but he didn’t. it was his first big film!
Congrats on being FP’d!

I would be SHOCKED if Tree of Life won. It was horrible pretentious horse puckey. My fingers are crossed for Glenn Close!
Andrea Brown said:
I agree, Tree Of Life was pretty horrible. It was hard to sit through, but I’m not surprised that it was nominated. When I spoke with people about it, everyone’s sentiments were the same: they either fell head over heels in love with it, or completely hated it. There was no middle ground. I see The Academy was in the category of the former.

Oooo I would have wondered but never looked it up if you hadn’t posted and gotten pressed! Thank you for sharing!

Graduating with a Film degree from Temple, I use to keep up with all of the award shows, but then I had a kid…and a wife. I haven’t seen any of these movies.
I think Streep should no longer be nominated for any awards. She gets nominated every year.
And Jonah is a shocker. But he is a pretty good actor. A lot of times physical comedians don’t get that recognition.

Okay, I saw that “Undefeated” was nominated for an Oscar and the first thing I thought of was the Sarah Palin film. I was a little mad at the Academy for a second!

Great to see them posted here. I made some nomination predictions on my blog. I have to say there were a lot of surprises and snubs I was not prepared for.

I definitely expected to see Tilda Swinton on this list… that was a major shocker for me!

I can’t wait to check out all the nominees! I just saw Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and I think it’s an unusual but strong contender. We’ll have to see if the curse of the Golden Globes affects Scorsese’s chancees… I’ll be tuned in!

I am so delighted to see The Artist have been nominated in several categories. It is a fabulous movie. I have recently blogged about it.
You can view it here: http://wp.me/p1LWhS-79
Both Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo are absolutely delightful in The Artist.
And the dog??? What about the dog?? What is he getting? He stole the show if you ask me! I vote for an Oscar for him too!!

I cannot understand how Nick Nolte is nominated for Warrior . . . Could anyone actually understand a word he said in that film?
Ibrahim Asghar said:
I have never understood anything he has ever said in any movie.
Cat said:
I just don’t understand all the hype over Moneyball. Even if the movie was pretty good, I really didn’t find anything particularly special about Brad Pitt’s acting. Just a lot of scenes of him brooding on a stadium seat…
Ibrahim Asghar said:
Thanks for this, i was going to download Moneyball in a day or two. I don’t really like Brad Pitt movies, i will watch The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

I can’t decide who I want to win for best actress in a supporting role, Melissa McCarthy or Octavia Spencer. On the one hand, I want actresses in a comedy role to get more recognition (maybe the nomination alone has done that?) On the other hand, Octavia played the heck outta Minnie!

Congrats to Melissa McCarthy on her nom!! I loved The Help!
I will have to see The Artist.
I just love this time of year when cinema is celebrated!
ravingmadscientists said:
I doubt she will but I’d loooove to see Melissa McCarthy win. She was phenomenal in Bridesmaids! Plus, it’d be nice to see the Academy give the statue to an actor in a comedic performance. Not that I don’t love dramas (I do) but outstanding comedic performances should not be overlooked.
Anyway, great post. I haven’t seen Tree Of Life but I thought it looked interesting. I’ve heard mixed reviews. What did you think of it?

I cannot believe that ‘Midnight In Paris’ was nominated, It is truly an awful movie. I was shocked that it was from Woody. It will be interesting to see if Michelle Williams can stand up against a strong list of contenders in her category..good luck!
Ibrahim Asghar said:
I really hope Jessica Chastain wins an oscar, i was rather surprised when i saw that she was nominated for The Help, her movie The Debt was great, she acted perfect in that movie. But she was in a lead role there.
I would be watching The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo this weekend, so maybe Rooney Mara has played some oscar worthy as she’s nominated. Gary Oldman i think deserves an oscar for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. He doesn’t get to say much in the whole movie, but his facial expressions were spot on.
Good to read this post, thanks 🙂

I feel quite bad this year for not seeing many of these films, especially The Artist and Hugo, but for me I would like to see Rooney Mara get some recognition as I thought her performance was fantastic; made a pretty much identical remake worth watching (was still a great film though, got to love David Fincher).

I created one for Rickmaniacs especially, but it can be easily altered and applied to almost anything. 🙂

I’m still sad that movies like Hugo took precedence over movies like Tinker Tailor – you’d imagine the Academy would have gone for the classically paced film over the modern paced film, but I guess that’s just me.
Ah well.

Drive was excellent, it should have received more than just a ‘sound editing’ nomination. What’s sound editing, anyway? What a crap year for movies, by the way.

We think terrence mallicks Tree of Life deserves accolades and we agree with you about Viola Davis deserving to win it this year, but meryl runs a stiff competition. And jonah hill is a suprise choice, we’re glad to see him with those other actors though. Becoming friends with Brad Pitt can do a body good!
We are dissapointed that Drive hasn’t been nominated for more, and the complete snub of Melancholia, which was our personnel favourite film of the year. At least kirsten got best actress at sundance for that.
Jessica chastaine is a standout this year for us, we hope she only gets bigger over time.
And Young adult seemed like it could of made it somehwere on the list.
The largest shocker we think is the lack of Tilda Swinton as a nominee, in We need to talk about Kevin, her performance looks amazing.
