“I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man.”

When Jay-Z said that, he meant it. That doesn’t always mean that he and his companies always make the best decisions. Such may be the case with one of his latest ventures with his clothing company Rocawear. The company announced last week that they would be selling “Occupy All Streets” shirts, which were allegedly created “in support” of the Occupy Wall Street movement. The shirts (at $22 a pop) were to be a “way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street.” That was all well and good, until the company announced that they had made no plans to donate any of the profits from the shirt sales to the cause.

This lit a firestorm of controversy, culminating with one of the OWS leaders saying that Jay-Z had the political sensibility of a hoodrat among other things. As of yesterday, the shirts have disappeared from the Rocawear website, with no comment from the company. Russell Simmons’ GlobalGrind is reporting that the shirts won’t be pulled (but there’s still no explanation as to why they’re no longer available on the site.)

Rocawear is not the only entity to attempt to capitalize off of the movement. The US Trademark commission has reported thousands of requests from vendors trying to copyright “Occupy Wall Street” and “We Are The 99 Percent”.
