American Idol season 6 winner Jordin Sparks is set to take on her first film role in the remake of the 1976 film “Sparkle”… If you’re not familiar with the story, it surrounds a trio of singing sisters and their journey from the church choir to national stardom. Sparks will take on the lead title role of Sparkle, who was originally portrayed by Irene Cara. Mike Epps will take on the role of Satin, the local player/drug lord (originally portrayed by Tony King)…it should be a departure from what we’ve seen of Epps, which has been mostly comedic roles. This role will give us a look into his depth as an actor.
The film is being directed by Salim Akil, produced by Mara Brock Akil, and executive produced by Whitney Houston (who is also in talks to play Sparkle’s mother Effie.) No word yet on who will play the eldest two sisters (Sister & Delores) but there has been buzz about Paula Patton taking on the role of the former. Production is set to begin this fall.
